East Herts Council Response

Thank you for your request for information, this has now been processed and the information that we hold is enclosed.

Has the council or its contractors used any glyphosate-based herbicides in the year 2018/2019? Yes or no.
Yes (through contracted maintenance).

Can you confirm the total litres of glysophate-based herbicides applied either by the council or its contractors in 2018/2019?
 93.3 Litres

What is the percentage change (increase or decrease) in litres usage of glysophate-based herbicides from 2017/2018 to 2018/2019?
24% increase – this is mainly because 2017 was a wet year, 2018 was a very dry year which provided an extended window of opportunity to use the product to achieve the contracted standard of weed control, particularly on hard surfaces, footpaths and car parks.

Can you confirm the total £ amount spent on glysophate-based herbicides by the council or its contractors in 2018/2019?
The Council outsources its grounds maintenance works and pays for weed control as part of a contractual grass, hard surface and shrub maintenance regime.  There is no one rate in the contract for the application of glyphosate products and therefore no separate account of costs in this respect.
From volumes recorded in their chemical usage data however, our contractor has calculated that dependent upon weather conditions (and not all years are the same) they purchase between £400 and £550 of Roundup Proactive 360 per annum at current costs which rose to approximately £670 this year.

What was the brand name of the glyphosate-based herbicides used in the year 2018/2019?
 Roundup Proactive 360

Were glyphosate-based herbicides used within a 10m radius of any playgrounds, schools, hospitals, housing estates or private homes in the year 2018/2019?
Yes

Has the council or its contractors currently used any other herbicides or methods of weedkilling in 2018/2019 i.e. not glysophate-based? If yes, what other herbicides or methods were used in 2018/2019?
Yes, the Council’s contractors use a residual chemical (Chikara) applied in February to supress weed growth.  This effectively reduces the need to apply glyphosate.

They also employ the use of hand weeding and hoeing in some ornamental areas including herbaceous beds and annual bedding.

Has the council or its contractors used any insecticides in the year 2018/2019?
If yes, what is the brand name, or active ingredient, of the insecticides used in 2018/2019?

No

Has the council or its contractors used any fungicides in the year 2018/2019?
If yes, what is the brand name, or active ingredient, of the fungicides used in 2018/2019?
No.  The Council has previously used fungicides to use maintain a bowling green but this has now been leased to the club who make their own maintenance arrangements.
