East Herts Council Response

17 May 2021

Thank you for your request for information, this has now been processed and the information that we hold is enclosed.

Could you please provide me with the following information for each year from 2015 through to 2021 for East Herts.

  1. Total count of instances of notices served to residents of intent to conduct "vegetation clearance"
  2. Total number of trees cleared within 100 meters of a residential property
  3. Total number of trees aged over 50 years old cleared within 100 meters of a residential property
  4. total number of trees removed across the county by year
  5. total number of trees planted by the Council across the county by year

The Council does not issue notices to residents of intent to conduct "vegetation clearance".  Maintenance to our parks and open spaces is programmed through a grounds maintenance contract on a regular basis.

Whilst we do sometimes need to remove trees where they are presenting a risk of injury or damage, we do not record the distance of trees to properties.  It is not possible to answer questions 1 or 2.

The Council is responsible only for trees on East Herts owned open spaces. We do not monitor the felling or planting of trees on privately owned land in or out of the district.  We cannot therefore provide a number for trees removed or planted across the County.

We carry out some inspection work for trees on other land owned by EHC on behalf of Asset Management.  Our Arboricultural Officer administers the law in relation to applications for tree work which is a separate process to that of planning permission to which this enquiry refers.

The number of trees felled and planted on East Herts Council land is provided in a recent FOI; Tree felling FOI  F20 / 000682.
